You step into your dark so that your light can shine.

Last night I took our dogs out down to the beach for a late walk. As it turned out it was one of those magical still nights that we haven’t had for a while due to the fact that The Beast from the East extended its holiday here.

Sometimes it takes a while for us to notice the calm -we get so used the storm -we still expect it.

As we moved across the golf course away from the street lights, darkness descended. Initially I switched my phone torchlight on but with a glance up to the sky – a smile started to spread across my face and a deep sense of happiness and awe filled me urging me to switch it off and onwards to the distance shoreline due to the new very low tide.

With every step into the dark I was rewarded with yet another star and another star until as I stood at the edge of the water about 200metres out from the sand dunes and all I could see above and around me was a multitude of stars dancing in the moonlight – my very own special light show.

As I stood absorbing the energy from this canopy of light- which is incredible- I was reminded of one of this barefoot thought from one of the flower doodles, and it got me thinking about the internal journey into the darkness of our own mind that we must do in order to switch back on all the lights from Source to our Soul.

I my case this meant being willing to face the dark thoughts, face the shames and secrets, and do you know what I found- just like on the beach -the moment you take 1 step into it – you are instantly rewarded by a brighter internal light that surpasses any artificial lights that you think are there to keep you safe.

My journey to becoming a Coach wasn’t possible without stepping into my dark- Yes I’ll admit it was not something I thought I would ever have the courage or ability to do.

I had no idea how beautiful is in when you finally step into the darkness- I had no idea that in that place your light shines brightest.

The first time a friend suggested I would make a good Life Coach I almost choked on my food. I had way too many skeletons and shadows in my closet and I wasn’t about to jump inside and sort them out. But as I have now come to understand – it was all essential and all of my personal experiences labelled as dark have not only given me the joy of my own personal night time illuminations but have helped me shine a light for others in their own courageous journey.

We all think that our secrets – our shames are something that only we have- that we are not strong enough to break free of them.

Thinking of them reminds me of the story about The Circus elephants tied by a single rope. The author is anonymous – it’s been going around for a long time I guess- as so often the oldest truths do.

As my friend was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did not. My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away.

“Well,” he said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size of rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.” My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Our shames and secrets are like that rope and stake- initially they are enough to stop us from moving onwards and then we think we can never escape them – we doubt our ability to break free of them and we stay amidst the artificial lights oblivious to the fact that the real light show lies in the darkness just beyond us- unaware of the fact that we are stronger than we know.

With love until tomorrow.
